Overview

I have been an ardent advocate and implementor of XML since 1997 and am co-author of both the XML Signature and XML Encryption specifications. Today, through my company XMLsec (http://www.xmlsec.com/), I provide consulting services in the areas of XML, Web Services, and Security.


Employment History

XMLsec 2001 June to present
  • Incorporated XMLsec to provide XML consulting and training services, primarily in the area of XML Security
  • Co-authored a high-level, technical report on Web Services Security for the Government of Canada
  • Working with an XML hardware appliance vendor to integrate XML Security and Web Services Security into their flagship product
  • Technical editor and contributing author of the book "Web Services Security" published by Osborne (ISBN 0072224711), see http://www.xmlsec.com/ for details
  • Designed a custom content management system tailored to meet the collaboration needs of several hundred contributors across two very different functions within Cisco. Acted as prime designer and team leader of a conversion system for transforming a very large collection of unstructured documentation into a format suitable for the online help in one of Cisco's major products. The conversion system makes extensive use of XML, XSL, and Web Services

Entrust 1994 May to 2001 June

XML Security Architect

  • As part of a cross-functional team, helped develop Entrust's XML Security strategy
  • Co-authored both the W3C/IETF XML Signature and the W3C XML Encryption specifications (see http://www.w3.org/TR/xmldsig-core/ and http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlenc-core/)
  • Also represented Entrust at standards meetings on
  • Co-authored one of the first experimental protocols binding a secure XML transaction with an XSL-generated legal contract
  • Provided interviews to the press; presented on XML Security at conferences and at customer meetings
  • Worked with early adopters integrating XML Security into online payments and B2B processes
  • Gained an in-depth understanding of the standards and implementations of PKI systems including key management, security policies, certification, registration, directories, and cross-certification

Information Developer

  • Developed a documentation system that generated PDF and HTML output from XML sources. Technologies used included Java, DOM, DSSSL, and XSL
  • Designed an XML-based strategy for managing multiple translations of human-readable information
  • Wrote much of the early Toolkit programmers' guides and reference material
  • Became well-versed in the internals of Entrust systems

  • Created tutorial information for programmers learning the OmniMark language for SGML processing

Master of Engineering - University of Alberta (1989). Specialized in system modelling and control theory. Developed the mathematical formulas for modelling an innovative, piezoelectric cochlear implant (bionic ear).
